Back to Black

Fuck!!! Another gifted soul lost to drug abuse.  Yes, this was not a surprise but it is heartbreaking nonetheless.  Thank you so much Amy for your raw talent and striking vocals.  You were truly born in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I will forever remember you, not as the starlet who gave up on life and let it all slip away, but for your peculiar beauty, your insatiable passion, and your ability to rock the shit out of wing-tipped eyeliner and that gorgeous beehive. Rest in peace darling.

32 Years Young

I venture to Vegas whenever financially possible, and since I've been pinching pennies all year long, I put aside some cash, month by month, for my birthday trip to the desert.  This year topped all others in terms of margaritas (gag...even the word makes me want to hurl), heat, and awesomeness.  What was most impressive about this trip, aside from my ability to stay away from the roulette table and my half-plank on a police car, was The Cosmopolitan Hotel.  It is incredibly chic in its design aesthetic.  The hotel features artwork from contemporary artists and offers an artist in residence program for those who are willing to have their work on display in the hotel.  Even the garage has artwork commissioned from Shepard Fairey and Retna! I have made the decision to stay at this hotel on my next visit, no matter the cost, in the hopes that just a bit of its amazingness will be bestowed upon me.  Enjoy these shots, as I have borrowed them from the web, seeing as I forgot to bring along my camera...like a fool.

The Sweet, Sweet Smell of Success

Finally, after a month and a half of waiting, this gorgeous thing came in the mail today. It is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.  Success...can you smell it?

David Lynch and the Red Button Man

I awoke this morning to something very awesome, and since this is an all-things-awesome blog, I need to share it.  My beloved band Interpol has done a collaboration with director David Lynch.  What has been created is an animation by Lynch, with Interpol's "Lights" as the soundtrack to it.  The animation is titled "I Touch a Red Button Man". Enjoy it and I hope this makes your day as it made mine.

Harry Potter Art

Each country that produces the Harry Potter series gets to choose an illustrator, and as Americans, we are fortunate that the Scholastic series of Harry Potter books are beautifully illustrated by Mary Grandpre.  Not only did she design the covers, she also illustrated a brief plate that comes along with each new chapter in each of the books ( J.K. Rowling herself has said that Grandpre's series is her favorite).  Here are just a few of Grandpre's designs.

For those adults who think they are too cool to carry around a Grandpre edition, there are these designed by illustrator M.S. Corley.
...and for those in the San Gabriel Valley area, for the next 20 days you can visit Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra to check out the current exhibit:

These are my favorite pieces in the show. Enjoy!
